SK Innovation has developed a new gas detection system that will increase worker safety, the company said on Monday.
It is based on Internet of Things (IoT) sensors that will installed on closed spaces in factories or construction sites that previously required human personnel for check-ups.
The company plans to apply it first to its Ulsan Complex, run by subsidiary SK Energy, in September after making the system lighter and smaller with further upgrades, it said.
Around hundred of the systems will be installed first at areas most susceptible to gas leaks. It will be expanded to all vulnerable areas operated by the company by 2021.
The sensors will immediately detect any remaining gas in vicinity so that workers can evacuate quickly.
The system has been in development since 2017 and has been deemed commercially viable, a company spokesperson said. Patent registration has also bee completed for the system.
