Microprocessing unit (MPU) market will recover this year, according to IC Insights.
MPU includes CPU for PC and servers as well as application processors (AP) such as system-on-a-chip (SoC) used in smartphones.
MPU market will grow 1.4% year over year in 2020 to be worth US$79.3 billion.
Last year, the market contract by 2.4% from a year prior. It was the first contraction in 10 years.
Next year, MPU sales will grow by 8.8% compared to 2020 to be worth US$86.3 billion.
PCs based on x86 architecture will account for 49% (US$38.6 billion) MPU sales this year. Tablet MPUs will account for 3% (US$2.3 billion) __ most of them will be Arm-based SoC.
Smartphone MPU will contract by 3% this year to be worth US$20.9 billion. They will account for 26% of total MPU sales.
PC demand increased in the first half of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic while smartphone’s fell. However, 5G smartphones launching in the fourth quarter will recover the smartphone MPU market.
Embedded MPU will grow 5% this year to be worth US$16.7 billion. It will account for 21% of total MPU sales. They will be used for network equipment, industrial and healthcare, consumer electronics, computers and peripherals as well as automotive applications.
