Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and other major TV vendors are planning to launch miniLED TVs in 2021.

MiniLED TVs will likely makeup the premium segment of liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs, which is still the dominant technology in the global TV market.

MiniLED is being touted as the next-generation light source __ LED chips in the 100 to 200 micrometers range will make up the backlight unit of LCD TVs. This will increase the TV’s contrast ratio compared to conventional LCD TVs that use 300 micrometers sized LED chips as their backlight unit.

The use of miniLED can also increase the efficiency of local dimming, in which some of the chips are turned off to express deeper blacks.

MiniLED TVs also has an advantage in brightness and price over organic light emitting diode (OLED) TVs.

Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest TV maker by sales, will likely push its miniLED TV offerings __ the company has already been pushing its QLED TVs, which are LCD-based, for the past couple of years and miniLED offers a perfect marketing slogan. It will likely launch a QLED miniLED TV.

Samsung Display’s quantum dot (QD) OLED technology will likely be commercialized after next year at the minimum.

Samsung Electronics has already built a miniLED and package supply chain with Seoul Viosys and PlayNitride of Taiwan.

According to TrendForce, out of the 4.4 million miniLED TV expected to be shipped next year, Samsung’s will account for over 2 million units. The research firm said Samsung’s miniLED TVs will offer 4K resolution and come in 55, 65, 75 and 85-inch sizes. They will have a contrast ratio of one million to one and have over 100 local dimming zones, TrendForce said, and will have between 8,000 to 30,000 miniLED chips on the backlight unit. Previous LCD TVs had only around 50 LED chips on the backlight unit.

LG Electronics, meanwhile, was preparing 4K and 8K resolution 70-inch miniLED TV, people familiar with the matter said. It will be the premium model in its Nanocell brand of LCD TVs.

However, LG won’t be as aggressive in pushing miniLED compared to Samsung as it is focusing more on OLED TVs.

LG Display last month said it plans to produce up to 8 million OLED panels for TVs next year.

The market’s expectations for miniLED TV is mixed __ some believe it is a stopover before OLED and microLED (with LED chips small than 100 micrometers) become more widespread while others believe they will be a game changer that can rely on reliable production processes and lower prices to stay in the market long-term.

China’s TCL, Konka and Skyworth are also expected to launch miniLED TVs.

Apple is also planning to launch a 12.9-inch iPad Pro with miniLED technology next year. Epistar will provide the miniLED chips, TSMT will offer its surface mount technology and LG Display will provide the LCD panel. Heesung Electronics will make the LCD modules.

Samsung, on the other hand, has currently no plans to apply miniLED to other products besides TVs.
