Korean battery makers expanding European facilities

South Korean battery manufacturers are expanding their facilities in Europe as local automobile makers accelerating the launch of new electric vehicles.

LG Energy Solution is placing orders for equipment to install on its third factory in Poland. The third factory will be built on land previously owned by Vestel near Wroclaw, where the company has its first and second factories. 

LG is planning to expand its annual production capacity in Poland from 70GWh to 100GWh through the third factory.

SK Innovation is planning to build a third factory at Ivancsa, Hungary. Its first and second factories at the country is at Komarom. The third factory is being built at the new location in consideration to its closer distance to factories run by Ford and Mercedes-Benz, its customers. The third factory will have an annual capacity of 10GWh, larger than the first factory’s 7.5GWh and second factory's 9GWh. SK Innovation will have an annual capacity of 26.5GWh in total, once the third factory is complete.

SK Innovation is planning to place orders for equipment to put in the third factory in August.

Besides Hungary, South Korean energy giant current has facilities in Seosan, South Korea and Yangcheng, China. Its total global annual production capacity stands at 29.7GWh. This is six times its capacity of 4.7GWh in 2019.

Samsung SDI is expanding its second factory at Goed, Hungary. The second factory is planned to be double the size of the first factory. Samsung will be manufacturing Gen 5 batteries that will have higher energy density that its predecessors. The batteries will be made with new materials and processes. The second factory will have seven production lines and over ten assembly lines. It will manufacture 12 million cells per month at full capacity.

Samsung SDI Hungary Zrt, the company’s subsidiary there, recently raised 403.8 billion won through share offerings. Samsung SDI also offered a debt guarantee of 538.4 billion won for the subsidiary.

These activities by the three South Korean battery makers are also expected to benefit their suppliers. Cathode maker EcoPro BM is considering building a factory in Europe. Its parent company, EcoPro, is planning to run a cathode recycling business with LG Energy Solution for the latter’s factory in Poland.

Posco Chemical, LNF, Daejoo Electronic Materials, Chunbo, Dongwha Electrolyte, Soulbrain and Enchem are all planning provide materials to the battery makers.

Mixing equipment makers TSI, Yunsung F&C and Jeil Machine also also gearing up for supply. PNT and CIS will supply equipment for electrode process. Nain Tech, Poongsan System, Youil Energy Tech, Philenergy and Mplus will providing equipment for lamination and stacking. Hana Technology and NS will be providing degassing equipment.
