The 8.5th generation equipment to be installed in the Korean customer’s factory

On the 25th, it was reported that development of Canon Tokki’s deposition equipment for large scaled OLED is in the final stage.

Canon Tokki of Japan is producing the 8.5th generation deposition equipment. In the third quarter of this year, it is sheduled to be in stock at Korean customer’s domestic plant, after receiving the certification from a Japanese governmental organization. Canon Tokki collaborated with Samsung Display to become the No. 1 vendor in small and medium-sized OLEDs by supplying the 6th generation half-cut deposition equipment.

According to a display industry official well-informed about Canon Tokki said, "It is called pilot line equipment, but its level is comparable to mass production equipment. They are not stopping in research and development; rather, they are targeting mass production of OLED panels and its production capacity is 30,000 per month."

Another equipment maker official said, "If they recognize the possibility, they will switch to the mass production line. From the beginning, they will start with about 26,000 units without stating that the production capacity is at 30,000. This is because the time required for securing the initial yield is unknown.”

Samsung Electronics' Visual Display (VD) division did not release its curved TVs in Korea this year. A TV industry official said, "The decision must be based on the fact that most of the TVs are used as wall hanging, especially in North America where the TVs are normally buried on the wall. Thus, curved TVs lose their appeal.” This means that Samsung Electronics' VD division has lost one of its 'appeal points' in the premium TV sales marketing.

Jong-Hee Han, president of Samsung Electronics' VD business unit since the end of 2017, adopted '8K resolution' and 'micro LED' as the premium TV two-track strategy this year as well.

Samsung Electronics' 65-inch 8K LCD TV 'Q900' recently received a rating of 84 by the Consumer Report, the US evaluation media. Sony of Japan and LG Electronics scored 90 and 89 on the same size 4K OLED TV, respectively.

Samsung Electronics began mass production of micro LED TVs in the second half of last year. This is the business that Samsung Display is not involved. An official in the display industry said, "When the Samsung Electronics VD business unit said that it will support micro LED TV, the reaction was not very good inside Samsung Display."

If Samsung Electronics' VD business unit's premium strategy and Samsung Display's technology leadership are the powers that lead and guide the investment on the large OLED panel production lines, securing yields and resulting costs are the powers that are pushing back Samsung Display's investment momentum.

LG Display, which started mass production of large-size OLED panels in 2013, surpassed the break-even point in the second half of last year for the first time in five years, A representative of Samsung Display said, "There is nothing confirmed about large OLED investments."
