LG Display has been assigned a national project to develop a stretchable display panel, the company said Thursday.

It will take the lead as one of 21 companies and institutions taking part in the project, which is backed by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).

The goal is to produce a stretchable display that can elongated by 20%, by the year 2024.

Stretchable displays are elastic and can be elongated like rubber bands, and will be able to support various shapes without distorting the screen, LG said.

It will be more versatile in its applications compared to flexible displays such as bendable, foldable and rollable panels, the South Korean display maker said.

A stretchable display could be used in foldable smart devices, wearables and in planes and automobiles much like flexible displays are doing right now, but with more freedom in design, LG added.
