Samsung expects 6G to launch in 2028

Samsung Electronics expects six-generation (6G) communication to be commercialized in 2028, the company said in a white paper on Tuesday.

6G services will go mainstream in 2030, Samsung said. 5G was commercialized in April of last year.

According to the white paper, 6G will have 50 times the peak data rate of 5G and one-tenth the latency. 5G will have a peak data rate of 1,000Gbps and air latency of fewer than 100 microseconds.

Performance and architectural requirement for 6G includes optimizing network design to overcome limited computation capability of mobile devices, enabling the flexible integration of new network entities, and applying artificial intelligence (AI) right from the very start of development, Samsung said.

6G will also bring about services such as truly immersive extended reality, high-fidelity mobile hologram and digital replicas, the South Korean tech behemoth said.

Sunghyun Choi, head of the Advanced Communications Research Center under Samsung Research said it wasn’t too early to start preparation for 6G despite 5G being in its early stages. Samsung will began 6G research in full scale this year, he added.
