Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra unveiled on Wednesday is the first to have Samsung Display’s lower display power tech HOP and Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus.

However, camera is less powerful than the Galaxy S20 Ultra launched earlier this year.

Galaxy Note20 Ultra comes with Samsung Display’s low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology. It is a combination of the best qualities of low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT and oxide TFT. LPTS is used mostly for smartphone panels and oxide for notebooks and tablets.

Samsung’s name for technology is HOP, which is short for hybrid oxide and polycrystalline silicon

LPTO can reduce the OLED panels power consumption by 15% to 20% compared to LTPS. It can save batter life when using augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) contents or streaming services on 5G connectivity.

With its application to the Galaxy Note20 Ultra, LTPO has now evolved to be available for 6-inch range smartphone panels. It was previously mostly used for 1-inch range wearable panels.

LPTO was first applied to OLED panels on the Apple Watch in 2018 and on Galaxy Watch Active2 in 2019. LG provided the display for the Apple Watch and Samsung Display gave its goods for Active2 in 2019.

Samsung Display’s HOP technology is expected to be applied to Apple’s iPhones launching next year. The South Korean display maker is a major OLED panel supplier to Cupertino.

Meanwhile, the cameras of the Note20 Ultra is weaker than the S20 Ultra.

Note20 Ultra sports a 108MP wide angle, a 12MP telephoto and a 12MP ultra wide for cameras on its back. S20 Ultra had a 48MP telephoto camera instead. Note20 Ultra also doesn’t have 3D Time of Flight (ToF) module. It instead has a laser auto focus sensor. Samsung made the swap to laser as ToF showed problems in focusing, people familiar with the matter said.

Note20 Ultra also has 5x optical zoom like the S20 Ultra, but digital zoom has been reduced to 50x instead of S20 Ultra’s 100x. Samsung didn’t talk-up the cameras of the Note20 Ultra, as saying they optimized it would be like an admittance that S20 Ultra cameras had problems.

The prostitution of the rear camera also seems worst for the Galaxy Note20 Ultra compared to the S20 Ultra. For the bronze version of Note20 Ultra, the border between the back cover and the camera module is all black and clear to see. S20 Ultra came in gray and black and showed less border.

6.9-inch Galaxy Note20 Ultra weighs 208g, heavier than the 6.8-inch Galaxy Note10 Plus’s 196g but lighter than 6.9-inch Galaxy S20 Ultra’s 220g. S Pen’s latency for the new Note stands at 9ms. The new phone is also covered in Corning’s latest Gorilla Glass Victus.
