Korea Information Display Association Creates ‘Kim Yong-bae Prize’

‘Kim Yong-bae Prize’ has been created to honor Professor Kim Yong-bae, an expert on display liquid crystal. It will be awarded for the first time on the 20th anniversary of the Korea Information Display Association.

The Korea Information Display Association (KIS) announced on 1st that it will award Kim Yong-bae Prize for the first time at the International Information Display(IMID) Young Leaders Forum in June next year. The award will be given to three people, including one winner and two gold prizes, and candidates will be recommended until March next year.

Born in 1946, Kim graduated from Yonsei University and earned a doctorate in liquid physics from Tokyo University in Japan. Since 1994, he has been in charge of the International Standard Project on Electronic Characteristics of Liquid Crystal Display(LCD). In 2001, he succeeded in developing the first liquid crystal photopolymer(TFT)-LCD in Korea. He served as the head of the second Korea Information Display Association and was awarded the 1906 Award by the International Electro technical Commission in 2006, but died suddenly In 2009.

Kim Hyung-jae, a Director of Korea Information Display Association (Professor at Yonsei University)said “ Kim Yong-bae Prize went through 1 year long discussion. This Prize is to celebrate Korea’s rise to the world display power with LCDs. “ he also said “people of academic world voluntarily participated in the donation activities to establish this award. This is the first time for a certain person to be honored in the display field. In the semiconductor field, ‘Gang Dae-won Prize’ was created in February last year. Kang was the first person to develop MOSFET, which is the basis of semiconductors and Floatting Gate, which is the storage space of NAND flash data.
