HFR wins 28GHz 5G fronthaul order from US telco 

They will be based on eCPRI standard

HFR has won an order to supply 28GHz spectrum 5G fronthaul equipment from a US carrier.

The deal is worth around 4 billion won and the South Korean telecom equipment maker will begin supplying the goods in the fourth quarter, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

The fronthaul equipment will be Ethernet-based Common Public Radio Interface (eCPRI) standard based, they said.

The will allow packet transfer, which was unavailable for CPRI standard, and crucial for 5G networks, they said.

HFR posted 13.4 billion won in operating loss and 31.9 billion won in sales in the first half of 2020.

The company said it will expand to Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. It said it invested 2.1 billion won for a 40% stake in KUB Telekomunikasi, a telecom equipment distributor in Malaysia.

The deal with the US carrier is expected help the company’s sales for next year.

South Korean analysts expect the company posted over 200 billion won in annual sales in 2021.

Last year, the company posted 2.2 billion won in operating profit and 156.7 billion won in sales for the full year.

HFR’s fronthaul equipment can be used in midhaul and backhaul as well, the people said.
