Samsung gets ISO certification for robot hip
It proves GEMS Hip is safe
Samsung Electronics has received the ISO 13482 certification for its robotic hip.
Its GEMS, or Gait Enhancing and Motivating System, Hip met the ISO’s safety requirements for personal care robots, the company said.
ISO 13482 was established in 2014 to ensure safety in mobile servant robots, physical assistant robots and person carrier robots.
Samsung is the first company to receive the certification.
GEMS Hip are attached to a wearer’s hip to assist them in walking. Samsung said it reduces metabolic cost of walking by 24% and increasing gait speed by 14%.
The South Korean tech giant also acquired the ISO 13489 certification for safety of machinery – safety-related parts of control systems for the hip’s safety feature that limits the maximum torque of its motor.
“The acquisition of this international certification of safety is an important milestone for us,” said Sungchul Kang, senior vice president and head of Robot Center at Samsung Research, a part of Samsung Electronics. “The certification will allow us to bring robots closer to our daily lives and enhance their accessibility and utility. We will utilize this momentum to further drive our commitment in robotics research.”
