Samsung Electronics will put in a penta camera on its Galaxy smartphone series for the first time next year.

The mid-tier Galaxy A72 will have five cameras on its back, TheElec has learned.

The smartphone will have 32MP selfie shooter on its front. On its back, there will be a 64MP, a 12MP ultra wide, 8MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, 5MP macro and a 5MP bokeh.

Samsung has only supported 3x optical zoom for flagship smartphone brands until now.

The recently unveiled Galaxy S20 Fan Edition (FE) model also has a 8MP camera with 3x optical zoom. On its back there is a 12MP wide angle, 12MP ultra wide and  the 3x optical zoom  camera.

Galaxy A71, the A72’s predecessor, has a quad camera set-up. The selfie shooter was 32MP, on its back there was the 64MP, 12MP ultra wide, 5MP macro and 5MP depth.

For the A72 the depth camera is now replaced by the bokeh camera. Bokeh camera allows the subject to be clearly shown while the background is blurred.

Samsung’s putting in of a penta camera is likely to strengthen its mid-tier smartphone line-up. Camera has been the focus of competition for smartphone vendors. Chinese companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi has already launched smartphones with penta cameras in the past.

Galaxy A7X and Galaxy A5X series are Samsung’s best selling smartphones in its A brand. Together they sell around 30 million units a year.

Meanwhile, Galaxy A52 will have a quad camera on its back like the Galaxy A51.
