Hanmi Semiconductor has opened a new production line for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding equipment for use in 5G chips, the company said.

The factory is named NK Kwak Hall after the company’s chairman.

The line for EMI shielding equipment will in the first floor of its new three story factory.

EMI shielding equipment is used to deposit stainless materials and copper on the surface of semiconductors. This allows the chip to shield EMI interference.

EMI shielding process was adopted by Apple, Qualcomm and Broadcom starting in 2016.

Hanmi introduced its first EMI shielding equipment in the same year.

The South Korean semiconductor equipment maker said it was the world’s largest EMI shielding equipment vendor in the world and expects 120 billion won in orders in 2020.

Adoption of EMI shielding is expected to rise with 5G telecommunication, autonomous vehicles and smartphones, the company added.
