South Korea release data set to October 30
1 Since the iPhone 3Gs was introduced via KT to South Korea in 2009, the country has never been included in the first list of countries to get a new iPhone. But for iPhone 12, South Korea has been included as on the list of countries to have the phone available for purchase first.
4 iPhone 12 comes in four models __ iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Max Pro and iPhone 12 Mini. A Mini model is a first for the iPhone series __ Apple claim it is the smallest, thinnest and lightest 5G phone. It weighs 133g, is 7.4mm thick and has a 5.42-inch OLED screen. It is smaller than the iPhone 8 and iPhone SE.
5 iPhone 12 is Apple’s first 5G smartphone. It supports 28GHz mmWave for the US model. The South Korean variation will only support sub-6GHz. It uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X6 modem. Apple is offering a smart data mode to reduce battery drain when the phones are connected to 5G. The new smartphones use LTE connection but shift to 5G when it deems a faster connection speed is necessary.
6.7 iPhone 12 has the biggest OLED screen in the series’ history. The iPhone 12 Pro Max touts a 6.7-inch screen. The iPhone 11 Pro Max had a 6.5-inch screen. The 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro has the same resolution __ 2532×1170(460ppi). This is a jump from iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 11 Pro’s 2688×1242(458ppi) and 2436×1125(458ppi), respectively.
14 iPhone 12’s AP is A14 Bionic made with TSMC’s 5nm process. A14 is Apple’s first 5nm AP. It has 11.8 billion transistors, 40% more than the A13. Considering Apple’s product launch history, A14 Bionic will likely power all future Apple smartphones and tablets until a new version is launched.
15 Apple has applied MagSafe on the iPhone for the time first with iPhone 12. It will support 15W charging. There won’t be a big difference with wired 20W charging. But accessories are pricey __ the charger and case each costs 55,000 won. The leather card wallet costs 75,000 won.
120 Unfortunately, the iPhone 12 doesn’t have 120Hz refresh rate for its screens __ this is likely due to the addition of 5G that already increases battery usage. Rival Samsung’s mid-tier model Galaxy S20FE has 120Hz.
2,000,000 iPhone 12 won’t support chargers and ear pods. Apple said this will reduce its carbon emission by 2 million tonnes. The EU however claimed Apple’s use of its own standard Lightning instead of USB-C causes more environmental damage. Apple’s decision likely comes down to cost rather than any environmental protection motives.
