Silicon wafer shipment in 2020 will grow 2.4% year over year thanks to high growth in memory semiconductors.

2021 will see a further 5% growth year over year, SEMI said.

This contrast with with 2019, when wafer shipment contracted by 6.9% from 2018.

Despite geopolitical conflicts that is changing the global semiconductor supply chain and uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic, silicon wafer shipment was recovering, SEMI said. This growth will continue in the next 2 years, the association said.

In September, SEMI said fab spending will grow 8% year over year in 2020 to reach US$63.2 billion. Spending in 2021 will increase further, by 13% year over year, to reach US$65.5 billion.
