Global semiconductor equipment sales jump 30% in Q3

Worldwide semiconductor equipment sales increased by 30% in the third quarter of 2020 compared to a year ago, according to SEMI.

Sales reached US$19.4 billion in the quarter.

China accounted for US$5.62 billion of the sales, followed by Taiwan’s US$4.75 billion. South Korea was third with US$42.2 billion.

Semiconductor equipment sales in South Korea dropped 6% in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter but jumped 92% year-on-year.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix’ increased spending on facilities likely helped this growth.

Samsung begun operations at its P2 line at its Pyeongtaek factory in August. In June, Samsung have commenced construction of additional facilities there.

The South Korean tech giant signed four contracts worth together 87.2 billion won in the third quarter for semiconductor equipment.

SK Hynix also singed two contracts in the quarter together worth 30.9 billion won.
