LG Uplus shows off autonomous parking tech 

LG Uplus on Thursday showed off a trial of its autonomous parking technology for cars.

The telco showed off its technology in which a smartphone is used for a consumer to pick an empty parking lot. The car that is registered to the smartphone will then park itself to the lot without the need of a driver.

The autonomous valet parking technology was developed in collaboration with Hanyang University’s AceLab and autonomous driving hardware company Controlworks.

LG Uplus provided the 5G cloud monitoring platform for the technology. The real-time data of the parking lot is sent to the smartphone using this platform.

The telco’s platform was also able to send traffic light information to that the car that was used. LG Uplus said this was more accurate than using the car’s cameras to check the traffic light.

Controlwork’s real-time parking space recognition system collects the parking lot information. The system’s artificial intelligence studies how an empty space looks like prior to deployment. Then it can use CCTV screen to find empty spaces in the lot.

Controlwork also supplied the hardware system for the car. Ten sensors and computing hardware for the software algorithm was supplied by the company. AceLab supplied the software algorithm.

LG Uplus used cellular-V2X standard for the trial. The company said a road built on the C-ITS standard is needed for the parking technology to work.
