Japan’s Rohm to begin Chikugo SiC factory operation in 2022

Japanese electronic parts manufacturer Rohm Semiconductor is planning to expand its silicon carbide (SiC) power device production.

The company has finished construction its new production building for SiC power device at its Apollo Plant in Chikugo, Japan in December of last year, Rohm said on Thursday.

Rohm is planning install production equipment sequentially starting in January this year into the building. Mass production will begin in 2022.

The Japanese companies said the building will be powered a 100% by renewable energy.

Rohm’s affiliate SiCrystal’s SiC wafer factory in Germany is also expected to live in 2022. The factory is also 100% powered by renewable energy.

Rohm begin produce SiC Schottky barrier diode and SiC MOSFET in 2010. It expanded to SiC power module and trench SiC MOSFET later on.
