Intel’s Mobileye to launch LiDAR sensor in 2025

Company to use crowdsourced maps, it says at CES 2021

Intel's autonomous driving subsidiary Mobileye unveiled its autonomous vehicle strategy and latest technology gains at CES 2021.

Mobileye CEO Amnon Shashua said the company has been focusing on Mobileye's automatically generated, crowdsourced high-definition maps, a driving policy based on Responsibility-Sensitive Safety (RSS), and the company's camera-first mature sensing technology. 

These technology will be combined with LiDAR system-on-a-chip by Intel and launched in 2025, Shashua said. The SoC, called EyeC, will be a photonic integrated circuit, which sends and receives data through light instead of electric signals. This will be faster than conventional electric signal chips. 

RSS is a rules-based algorithm that calculates contingencies that for humans may be difficult to predict.

The company’s crowdsourced map is based on five year of big data, Mobileye said. The company said it has competed a 1 billion km map that used a million cars by six automobile makers to complete.

Mobileeye’s True Redundancy technology combines camera, radar and LiDAR technology to increase recognition feature. These will be more cost efficient and faster and previous conventional sensing technologies, Mobileye said.

The company said it expects at least ten years for autonomous driving Level 4 to be massively available (5% of all new autonomous cars). 

Companies will need to expect zero profits up to that period, Mobileye said. It will be difficult for companies to continue autonomous driving projects without government support, CEO Shashua said.

Mobileye plans to mass produce Level 2 system cars in September 2022. These cars will be camera based and affordable for consumers, the company said.

The company had developed a software-defined imaging radar, which supports 2304 channels, 100DB dynamic range and 40DBc side lobe level.

Mobileye was also developing a robot taxi that uses its camera, LiDAR and radar solutions. This will be launched in 2025.
