Automotive display shipment jumped 22% in 2020 from a year prior, market research firm Omdia said on Friday.

The firm said it expects 351 million units of automotive display 9-inch or larger were shipped.

Demand contracted in the first half of the year due to the pandemic but recovered in the second half.

Growth in the area was led by center stack display (CDS), also known as center fascia.

In 2020, CSD shipment jumped by 47% from the previous year, Omdia estimates.

CSD also accounted for around 40% of the automotive display market in 2019 but this increased to over 50% in 2020. In the fourth quarter, CSD accounted for 56.5% of all automotive displays.

Instrument cluster display (ICD) was also propelling growth. ICD shipment increased by 11%. ICD accounted for around 30% of all automotive displays.

Omdia said shipment increase of CSD and ICD were thanks to strengthened autonomous driving and safety features.

Automotive monitors accounted for mid-10% of all displays. Rear seat entertainment displays and side and room mirrors each accounted for less than 1%.

12.3-inch was the most popular size in automotive displays. They accounted for 32.7% of automotive displays shipped in the third quarter of 2020. CSD accounted for 64% and ICD 34.8% of the 12.3-inch displays.

10.2-inch was the second most popular automotive display, accounting for 20.15 of the total. 85.1% of them were CSD and 11.5% were monitors.

Omdia said it expected the automotive display market to recover in the second half of 2021. However, though automobile companies are planning to stock up displays, display panel makers may be less inclined to make them due to low profitability.
