Samsung Display said on Tuesday that it has supplied organic light emitting diode (OLED) panels that consumes 16% less power than predecessors for Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S21 Ultra smartphone.

The display panel company said it has applied new organic material with improve luminous efficiency.

The new organic material likely refers to its new material set M11, which improves the movement speed of electrons.

M11 is also expected to power OLED panels that will be used in Apple’s iPhone 13 series.

Samsung Display likely applied the previous M10 material set for the regular Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+.

When electron speed on the organic material layer is improved, this allows for panel to express brighter light with less power. Less power consumption of the display panel means longer battery life for smartphones. 5G and games are increasing power consumption in smartphones.

Samsung Display said it has collaborate with global material makers for the past 10 years to increase the competence of the organic materials it uses in its OLED panels. The company said it has filed over 370 patents in the area a year for the past three years in South Korea, the US, China, Japan and Europe.

As of 2020, the company had over 5,000 patents in organic materials, Samsung Display said.

OLED uses organic materials that emit light when electricity passes through them. The efficiency of the organic material uses effects power consumption, luminance, color gamut, high dynamic range and outdoor visibility of the display panel.
