Samsung Display’s OLED panel receives sunlight visibility verification from UL
Panel reaches peak brightness of 1,500 nits in S21 Ultra
Samsung Display said on Tuesday that its latest OLED panel has received the Sunlight Visibility verification from Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
The OLED panel was used on the Galaxy S21 Ultra smartphone that launched last month.
UL’s test showed that the OLED panel scored 73% in DCI-P3 ambient color gamut and has peak brightness of 1,500 nits.
Samsung Display said its own internal testing showed that color gamut in bright environment dropped from 99% to 73% when the OLED moved from indoors to outdoors. This was far better than liquid crystal display’s drop from 78% to 30%.
The company used its new organic material set called M11 for the OLED panel on the Galaxy S21 Ultra to reach a peak brightness of 1,500 nits. Galaxy S20 Ultra’ OLED panel had a peak brightness of 1,300 nits.
Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus have peak brightness of 1,300 nits, superior to Galaxy S20 and S20 Plus’ 1,200 nits. Samsung Display used the M10 organic material set for the models.
