Samsung launches affordable NVMe SSD 980
Has 6 times faster sequential read speed than SATA SSDs
Samsung Electronics on Wednesday launched a new solid-state drive (SSD), called NVMe SSD 980.
It is the company’s first consumer SSD that is NVMe interface based.
The Korean tech giant used its Gen-6 V-NAND for the SSD. It offers up to 3,500 and 3,000MB/s sequential read and write speeds, respectively.
The SSD offers up to 500,000 and 480,000IOPS random read and write speeds, respectively.
The sequential read is six times faster than that of previous SATA SSDs, Samsung said.
NVMe SSD 980 is aimed at notebook PC users as well as content creators and home gamers, the company said.
Samsung said it optimized the controller and firmware on the SSD. The SSD is DRAM-less __ it connects with the DRAM of the PC directly through host memory buffer technology.
The newly upgraded Intelligent TurboWrite 2.0 also offers significantly enhanced sustained performance over the previous iteration, by allocating a much larger buffer storage area inside the drive, it said.
The SSD also has heat controlling features __ power efficiency improved 56% from 970 EVO, Samsung said.
NVM2 SSD will be priced at US$49.99 for 250GB, US$69.99 for 500GB and US$129.99 for 1TB. It will be available in forty countries, including South Korea, the US, Germany and China.
