SK Hynix will focus on improving the profitability of its NAND flash business going forward, the company CEO said on Tuesday at its shareholders’ meeting.

The South Korean memory maker invested in Kioxia in 2018. Last year, it announced that it would be acquiring Intel’s NAND business unit.

SK Hynix CEO Lee Seok-hee said the company has strengths in NAND for mobile devices, while Intel was strong in eSSD. This will create synergy between the two, which will ultimately allow the company to become a leader in NAND as it is in DRAM, Lee said.

The CEO also said its SSD business can create social value as well. Converting all HDD in use to low-power SSD will reduce carbon emission by 93%, Lee claimed.

The company will, through its SSD technology, contribute economically as well as help resolve environmental issues, the CEO added.

SK Hynix is also planning to strengthen research and development in various regions such as the US and Europe, Lee said.

It will also look for promising startups in artificial intelligence, autonomous driving and 5G, he added.
