Global semiconductor IP giant Arm has unveiled its new Armv9 architecture on Wednesday. It is first new architecture in 10 years since the launch of Armv8.

New chips designed with Armv9 will be launched later this year.

Arm said it strengthened digial signal processing (DSP) and machine learning (ML) capabilities as well as enhanced security in the new architecture.

Expected CPU performance increases from the use of the architecture was more than 30% over the next two generations of mobile and infrastructure CPUs, the UK-based firm said.

The company expects more notebook based on Armv9 to be launched going forward as there was a movement in the industry to develop notebook CPU based on Arm architecture.

“As we look toward a future that will be defined by AI, we must lay a foundation of leading-edge compute that will be ready to address the unique challenges to come,” said Arm CEO Simon Segars.

“Armv9 is the answer. It will be at the forefront of the next 300 billion Arm-based chips driven by the demand for pervasive specialized, secure and powerful processing built on the economics, design freedom and accessibility of general-purpose compute.”

The number of Arm-based chips shipped continues to “accelerate,” with more than 100 billion devices shipped over the last five years, the company said.

Arm applied confidential computing architecture for Armv9. Confidential computing shields portions of code and data from access or modification while in-use, even from privileged software, by performing computation in a hardware-based secure environment, the company said.

The architecture also supports scalable vector extension 2 (SVE) technology, co-developed with Fujitsu, to handle 5G, virtual reality, augmented reality, DSP and ML workloads.

Samsung and Qualcomm will also launch application processors using ArmV9, Arm said.
