Kolon supplies PI film for Lenovo’s foldable notebook

Kolon Industries said on Monday that it has supplied its transparent polyimide (PI) film as cover window for Lenovo’s foldable notebook.

LG Display supplied the foldable OLED panel for the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Fold. The notebook has a 13.3-inch screen.

Kolon Industries begin producing transparent PI in 2019. Since then, it had supplied the product to Huawei Mate X and Motorola Razr smartphones to be used as cover window.

PI film is competing with ultra-thin glass in the cover window market for foldable display panels.

Kolon Industries stressed that its transparent PI film supply to Lenovo marks the first instance in which the material is being used for a mid- to large-sized foldable display panel.

It will continue to offer its products for application in various form factors, the company added.

Thinkpad X1 Fold was launched in North America last year. It became available in South Korea in February.
