Posco to supply anode to LG and General Motors’ Ultium Cells

Posco Chemical said on Monday that it will be supplying battery anode to Ultium Cells, the joint venture between LG Energy Solution and General Motors.

It follows the company’s deal supply cathode to Ultium Cells in December last year.

The Korean chemical firm will be supplying its anode material with low thermal expansion.

This will increase the stability, longevity and charging speed of batteries, while lower their price.

Battery anodes are usually made of natural or synthetic graphite. Natural graphite allows for higher energy density. The downside is they are more susceptible to thermal expansion from repeated charging, which lowers the battery’s life span. Synthetic graphite are more stable but are also more expensive.

Posco Chemical will be manufacturing the anode it supplies to Ultium Cells from its plant at Sejong City, which it is currently expanding.
