EV sales in February surges 135%

Around 280,000 units of electric vehicles are expected to have been sold in February this year, according to EV Volumes.

This is an increase of 135% from a year prior. The firm said around 278,000 units of EV, which includes pure EV, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel-cell cars, is expected to have been sold in the month.

If this pace continues, EV unit sales could reach up to 6 million units this year, EV Volumes said. Last year, 4.6 million EV units were sold.

Unit sales in China grew 606.2% year-on-year in the month. This was followed by Germany’s 145% and US’ 112.6%

Sales also increased 29% year-on-year in France and 22% in Norway.

In South Korea, unit sales increased 312.4% compared to the previous month.

Tesla Model 3 was the best selling car model in the month at 28,000 units. Hongguang Mini was the second best selling model at slightly over 20,000 units.

Tesla Model Y sold 14,000 units in the month at placed third. Renault Zoe and Volkswagen ID.3 reached 3,000 unit sales each. These two models enjoyed high popularity in Europe last year.

Out of the top ten best sellers, three were made by Chinese companies, indicating that China’s local market has overcome the impact of the pandemic.

While the overall global market will remain optimistic this year, there were still uncertainties such as the pandemic and chip shortages to watch out for, EV Volumes said.
