TSMC recovers from another power outage
At its P14 plant
TSMC said on Wednesday that it suffered a power outage at its P14 plant which was recovered on the same day, according to Reuters.
Some of the machines still worked during the outage thanks to backup systems, the Taiwanese chip giant said.
The company will investigate the damages caused by the outage.
The incident is to have affected to up to 30,000 silicon wafers. This could lead up to 1 billion yuan in damages.
TSMC is the world’s largest contract chip maker, or foundry.
Its P14 plant mostly makes chips for automotive. The incident will likely exasperate the current global chip shortage that is negatively affecting automobile production worldwide.
Earlier on March 31, TSMC suffered an outage at its P12 plant due to a fire.
Japan’s Renesas Electronics also suffered a fire at its N3 building its factory. The firm is still repairing the damages.
In February, Samsung, NXP and Infineon saw their chip plants in Austin, Texas halt production from power shortage caused by the cold weather there.
In December, Micron’s chip plant in Taiwan halted production due to earthquakes.
