SK Hynix begins production of SSD based on 128-layer NAND

SK Hynix said on Thursday that it has began to manufacture its new solid-state drive (SSD) called PE8110 E1.S.

The SSD is aimed at servers and the company will begin supplying them to customers in May.

PE8110 E1.S is based on 128-layer NAND. SK Hynix said the new SSD has improved writing and reading speeds by up to 88% and 83%, respectively, from its predecessor PE6110, which was based on 96-layer NAND.

The new SDD also meets open compute project (OCP) standards.

SK Hynix said the new memory will also be immediately interchangeable with existing SSDs in its customer’s system/

The company will also offer five years of after-sales services for its latest SDD, it said.

SK Hynix developed its 128-layer NAND back in June 2019. It has since use the chip for three of its enterprise SSDs __ SATA SE5110, PCIe Gen 3 PE8111 E1.L, and PE8110 M.2.

The latest addition of the E1.S form factor means the company now has a complete SSD line-up, the Korean memory maker added.
