South Korean fabless firm Telechips have recently finished development of its vehicle microcontroller unit (MCU), TheElec has learned.

The firm is currently promoting an engineering sample version to customers, people familiar with the matter said.

It is Telechips’ first MCU. The company previously focused on system-on-a-chip for in-vehicle infotainment.

The MCU was developed as part of a national project given by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in 2019.

It has been called vehicle control processor internally by Telechips, and uses a 28-nanometer process. Samsung will be providing its 12-inch fabrication plant for foundry.

A Telechips spokesperson said local and overseas automobile customers were reviewing the MCU positively due to the recent global chip shortage.

The MCU will begin mass production after customer approvals, they added.

Previously, Telechips said it expected the MCU to start production in 2022.

Starting his month, the company also began supplying its vehicle cockpit SoC, Dolphin 3, to a Chinese tier-1 supplier to automobiles. It is also developing a successor to the chip called Dolphin 5 that will have neural processing unit (NPU).
