Qualcomm launches Snapdragon 778 mobile AP

Qualcomm on Wednesday unveiled its latest mobile application processor, the Snapdragon 778.

The AP is aimed at mid- to high-tier smartphones. It will power phones by Honor, Oppo, Realme, Xiaomi and Motorola launching in the second quarter.

Snapdragon 778 was made with 6-nanometer FinFET process by TSMC. 

The CPU on the chip is Arm-based Kryo 670 and GPU is Adreno 642L. 

Qualcomm said both CPU and GPU has 40% increased max performance compared to their predecessors.

For AI, Hexagon 770 processor and its Gen 6 AI engine is being used on the chip. Snapdragon 778 has 12TOPS in performance.

The latest chip also has three Spectra 570L image signal processors. These allow for three images used in wide, ultra-wide and zoom features to be taken simultaneously.

What was filmed by three lens can also be combined to one video. The video cam be filmed with 4K HDR Plus.

Snapdragon 778 comes with Snapdragon X53 5G modem-RF system. It supports sub-6GHz 5G connection and 2.9Gbps data transfer speed in Wi-Fi 6. Qualcomm applied FastConnect 6700 for the seppds.

The chip also supports 160MHz channel in 4K QAM, 5GHz and 6GHz spectrums.

Variable rate shading technology is also applied for games and graphic intensive tasks.

Qualcomm also announced an update on its Gen 4 Snapdragon X65 5G modem-RF system, which was first unveiled in February.

The system will support 10Gbs 5G speed through a software update by support 3GPP Release 16 standard. It will also support 200MHz carrier bandwidth. It will support 1GHz mmWave as well as FDD and TDD. It can group 300Mhz spectrum under 6GHz.
