Samsung introduces new chipsets and mmWave base stations for 5G

Samsung Electronics on Tuesday introduced a slew of new 5G network solutions.

The company unveiled its new chipsets, high performance base station line-up, and 5G virtualized RAN (vRAN) solutions at an online event called Samsung Networks: Redefined, first such event hosted by Samsung Network, its networking business unit.

The new chipsets are: second generation 5G modem SoC, third generation mmWave RFIC, and a new digital front end (DFE) and RFIC integrated chip.

The chips will be applied to Samsung’s network equipment launching in 2022.

The South Korean conglomerate said the new 5G modem SoC can process double the data of its predecessor, while power consumption per cell has been cut to half. The SoC also supports beam forming, the company said.

The new mmWave RFIC supports 28GHz and 39GHz spectrums and the antenna on the chip is half the size of its predecessor’s, Samsung said.

DFE-RFIC chip has double the bandwidth of its prior model, the company added.

Samsung also unveiled its base station line-up: dualband Compact Macro, massive MIMO radio, and the new One Antenna Radio.

The dualband Compact Macro supports 2400MHz bandwidth. The massive MIMO radio consumes 20% less power and is 30% smaller than its predecessor. One Antenna Radio integrates 3.5GHz radio with antenna in the low- to mid-band.

Samsung also said its vRAN solution can be connected to massive MIMO radio and offers gigabit data transfer speed.

The company also claimed it will offer expanded reality, mobile hologram and digital copy solutions as part of its vision for 6G.
