A Samsung Electro-Mechanics executive said on Wednesday that the company was researching metalens.

Metalens is a flat lens that have nano particles aligned on its surface.

Though the lens is flat, the particles bend the light to collect them.

The technology allows lens to be made thinner than they are currently.

Lee Shi-woo, senior vice president and director of Samsung Electronics’ Corporate R&D Institute, was answering questions from reporters during the Nano Korea 2021 industry event in Seoul.

Lee said the company was researching ways to apply nano bumps on the lens.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics was in the process of trying to apply the technology in production, the director said.

The company has previously touted that it has technologies in lends and actuators for camera modules.

Lens molds require control of materials nanometer in size. The firm has succeed in manufacturing 7P lens so far.

Commenting on the company’s progress is multi layer ceramic capacitors (MLCC), the director said the company believes it needs to look into nano structures to make the capacitors thinner.

The company is looking to make the dielectric particles used in MLCC into nanometer in size and ultra thin. It is also looking to atomize the powders used to make the capacitor.

For 0603 MLCC (0.6mm horizontally and 0.3mm vertically), Samsung Electro-Mechanics uses 0.47 micrometer dielectric particle and 100 nanometer powders. It is aiming to thin out the dielectric particle to 0.36 micrometer by 2022 and to 0.30 micrometer by 2025. It is aiming to downsize the powers into double digit nanometer size. In turn, it is aiming to increase the capacitor’s capacity to 60.4uF per ㎣ from the current 28.6uF.
