Merck said on Thursday that it will supply the hole transporting layer (HTL) material used in the production of OLED panels to LG Display.

The layers will be used in LG Display’s production of smartphone OLED panels, which will be supplied to Apple for the upcoming iPhone 13.

OLED panels are comprised of emission material layer (EML) that emits the light. It also layers such as HTL and electron blocking layer (EBL) that transports the electron.

EBL blocks electrons from EML for reaching HTL. Merck said its material can maintain this at an optimized rate to increase panel efficiency and life span.

Merck has previously supplied HTL to LG Display for use in large OLED panels used in TVs.

The chemical firm is currently spending 25 billion won to build a new OLED material facility in Pyeongtaek, South Korea.
