LG Energy tops battery market share 

In global market excluding China

LG Energy Solution was the top vendor in batteries from January to May in the global market excluding China, according to SNE Research.

The South Korean company held a 35.5% market share during the time period, an increase of 7 points from 28.8% of the same time period a year ago.

This was followed by Panasonic of Japan, which held a 27.8% share and Samsung SDI’s 10.1%. SK Innovation was fourth place at 9.7%.

Chinese battery giant CATL controlled a 9.6% market share, taking fifth place.

However, the company showed a 311.9% increase year-on-year thanks to increased sales of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y as well as other models that use its batteries.

LG relied on Volkswagen ID.3/ID.4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E for its shares. Samsung SDI relied on Audi E-Tron, Fiat500 and Ford Kuga. SK Innovation ships its batteries to Kia Niro, Hyundai Kona and Benz GLE PHEV.

Battery usage globally, excluding China, from January to May was 46.2GWh, 2.2 times more than the same time period a year ago.
