Display equipment maker Top Engineering said on Tuesday that it is aiming to secure sales between 20 billion won to 30 billion won in the next year or two from its roll-to-roll equipment business.

The company is aiming to reduce its reliance on its main display equipment business.

Roll-to-roll equipment processes thin and flexible materials such as films and copper foils.

It comprises of an unwinder, infeeder, coater, dryer, out feeder, laminator and rewinder.

Top Engineering launched the business in October last year. It hired engineers with over 10 years of experience in roll-to-roll equipment for the business.

It supplied its first roll-to-roll equipment to a major customer’s factory in Singapore. The customer is expected to order more this year.

The equipment is applicable in the production of lithium-ion batteries, hydrogen fuel-cells and bio medicine, Top Engineering said.

Roll-to-roll equipment accounted for 8% of its sales last year __ or 12.8 billion won out of 155.7 billion won.

Liquid crystal display (LCD) equipment currently accounts for up to 70% of the company’s sales.

Its two main equipment are dispensers and scribers (used to cut glass). Dispensers dispenses the liquid precisely on the glass. Scribers are used to cut the LCD cells.

Top Engineering and Mitsuboshi Diamond Industrial each control half of the global scriber market.

The South Korean company supplies its equipment to LG Display, HKC and other panel companies. It also supplies scribers for OLED panels to LG Display.
