‘Intel’s new processor to secure 30% market share in server CPU market in 2021’

Intel’s latest Gen 3 Xeon Scalable Processor, codenamed Ice Lake, will take up up to 30% of the global server CPU market by the year’s end, according to market research firm TrendForce.

The US chip giant announced the x86 architecture-based processor in April.

Intel has claimed the processor has 1.46 time increased performance compared to Gen 2. In terms of AI for image categorization, the chip performs 1.56 times faster than its predecessor, Intel had said.

The company’s x86 architecture, first announced in 1978, dominates the server CPU market with a share of around 97%.

Arm has expanded into the server CPU market in recent years but it has very little share in the area.

Intel and AMD are the main manufacturers of server x86 CPU servers. According to market research firm Mercury Research, in the first quarter of this year, Intel controlled 91.1% market share in the global server x86 CPU market, while AMD held a share of 8.9%.

AMD only had a share of 1% in the same quarter of 2018. But the firm’s share in the quarter had increased to 2.9% in 2019 and 5.1% in 2020.

In March, AMD unveiled its own 7nm Gen 3 server CPU, Epyc 7003 Series. IPS clock improved by 19% compared to its predecessor, the company had said.

Arm’s architecture won’t be a match with x86 up to 2023, TrendForce noted.

AMD could increase its share in server CPU market by up to 15% next year, it added.
