LG Energy tops EV and PHEV battery supply in 1st half

LG Energy Solution was the top battery supplier of batteries for battery electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in the first half of 2021, according to market research firm EV Volumes.

The South Korean company supplied 30.8GWh of batteries with a market share of 27% during the time period.

CATL was second place with 23% market share, having supplied 26.2GWh of batteries during the first half of the year.

Panasonic was third place with 18.9GWh and 17% market share; Samsung SDI was fifth with 6.2GWh and 6.2% market share: SK Innovation ranked sixth with 5.4GWh and 5.4% of market share.

Hybrid electric vehicles and mild hybrid electric vehicles were excluded from the list.

According to EV Volumes, during the first half of 2021, a total of 40.2% of electric vehicles used battery as the main power source.

While batteries remained mostly an accessory power source, pure electric vehicle supply was rapidly increasing, the firm noted.

During the first half of the year, a total of 784,000 units of battery electric vehicles were sold, followed by plug-in hybrid vehicles and 380,000 units and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at 3,730 units.

Hybrid electric vehicles sales reached 896,800 units and mild hybrid electric vehicle sales reached around a million units during the time period.

Tesla sold the most units of battery electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid vehicles during the time period.

It sold 386,000 units during the period for a 14.6% market share. Its Model 3 was the best selling car model out of the bunch with 242,700 units. HongGuang Mini soold by China’s Wuling was seond with 181,800 units.

Volkswagen sold 344,000 units for a market share of 13%.

EV Volumes expects a total of up to 6.66 million units of electric vehicles to be sold this year.
