CIS secures land for new solid electrolyte factory 

CIS said on Tuesday that it has signed a contract to buy 27,942 meter-square of land at Daegu for a new solid electrolyte factory.

The space is 1.4 times that of its previous two factories at the same industrial zone.

The company plans to build a new factory in the new land by next year.

CIS formed a new subsidiary called CI Solid in April earlier this year to oversee its solid electrolyte business.

Solid electrolytes replace liquid electrolytes in batteries that are prone to turn into gas that increases the chances of explosion at high temperatures.

CIS said it will manufacture the solid electrolytes using a new consecutive production system rather than the previous batch type production method.

The company said solid electrolyte market is expected to open up when Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, a joint venture between Toyota and Panasonic, beings mass production of solid-state batteries in 2022.
