General Motors to recall more Bolt EVs with LG batteries 

General Motors said on Friday that it will voluntarily recall an additional 73,000 units of Chevrolet Bolt EVs.

It is the US car giant’s third recall involving the model.

The latest recall it expected to cost General Motors US$1 billion.

LG is the supplier of batteries for the model. 

Last year in November, General Motors recalled 69,000 units of 2017 to 2019 models of Bolt EVs.

Last month, when announcing its second recall, the company had asked customers to set their charging limit at 90% of the full capacity.

“After further investigation into the manufacturing processes at LG and disassembling battery packs, GM discovered manufacturing defects in certain battery cells produced at LG manufacturing facilities beyond the Ochang, Korea, plant,” the car giant said in a statement.

“GM and LG are working to rectify the cause of these defects. In the meantime, GM is pursuing commitments from LG for reimbursement of this field action.”

For the first recall, LG had decided commit 325.6 billion won to cover some of the costs.

The company is expected to additionally reimburse General Motors for the latest recall.

LG said it will actively collaborate with the car giant in the recall process.
