LG Chem said on Tuesday that it has developed a foldable cover window using polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

The company said it coated both sides of the film with a new material it developed to strengthen its heat resistance and mechanical properties.

Foldable cover windows are put atop foldable displays to protect them from external shocks.

They need to be durable, transparent and flexible.

LG Chem claimed its cover window was thinner than strengthened glasses while it also doesn’t suffer from cracks.

It was much more durable than polyimide films and can withstand over 200,000 folding actions, the company said.

The company will secure productivity of the windows by 2022 and began selling them in 2023, it added.

LG Chem also said it was developing a way to make a cover window by just coating the display without the need for a film.
