CU-Tech aims to secure 5 PCA lines for Samsung Display’s QD-OLED

CU-Tech said on Friday that it plans to secure five production lines for printed circuit assembly (PCA) for use by Samsung Display in quantum dot (QD)-OLED display panels.

CU-Tech said Samsung Display has sent QD-OLED samples to Samsung Electronics and Sony. The company expects the display panel maker to commence addition spending next year to expand its QD-OLED production.

Samsung Display was preparing to start production of QD-OLED around the end of the year, a CU-Tech executive said at an online press event on Friday.

CU-Tech will build three PCA lines in 2023 and two PCA lines in 2024 to meet the expected production expansion of QD-OLED by the South Korean display panel maker, the executive said.

PCA is a printed circuit board with the components assembled onto them. The board requires surface mount technology to manufacture.

CU-Tech, once it secures five PCA lines, can handle around 600,000 units of QD-OLED TVs a month.

The company expects a single QD-OLED TV to require one controller board and two source boards.

CU-Tech said it expected sales of up to 100 billion won a year from its PCA business.

QD-OLED will be mostly produced at Vietnam when production is expanded, the CU-Tech executive said. The first batch of QD-OLED panels will be manufactured at the Q1 line at Asan in South Korea.

Samsung Display, besides Samsung Electronics and Sony, has also sent samples of QD-OLED TV to Panasonic, TCL and Xiaomi, the executive said.

CU-Tech was founded in 2004. Its majority shareholder is Japan’s Restar Holdings.

It has subsidiaries in China and Vietnam. It has been led by ex-Samsung SDI employee Baek Yeong-hyeon, who is the CEO, since 2012. The company recorded 221.6 billion won in sales and 16 billion won in operating income last year. It is planning to list on KOSDAQ on October 8.
