Hyundai Motor to develop dedicated platform for UAM
As it did for electric cars
Hyundai Motor will develop a dedicated platform for its urban air mobility (UAM) vehicles as it did for electric vehicles, a senior executive said.
The automobile giant believes having a dedicated platform for UAM will increase safety and allow it to expand the business more widely, Lee Joong-hyun, the development leader of UAM machine at Hyundai Motor, said at a conference held in Seoul.
Hyundai Motor is also planning to develop a UAM vehicle to carry loads, besides passengers.
A UAM vehicle that can carry passengers around will launch first in 2028, Lee said.
At the moment, the automobile giant was considering offering air taxis that can carry four to five people.
Lee also said Hyundai Motor’s first-generation UAM vehicle launching in 2028 will be completely autonomous.
However, the company was also developing autonomous technology that requires a driver in case authorities don’t approve of fully autonomous UAM vehicles.
