Texas Instruments unveils new power module to extend EV drive time

Analog semiconductor firm Texas Instruments has unveiled a new DC-DC bias supply module that it says can extend the drive time of electric vehicles.

UCC14240-Q1 was made using a distributed architecture that operates individual bias switches.

The module is 3.5mm in height and 12.8mm x 10.3mm in surface area.

The height is below half of its predecessor and the smaller size will allow powertrain on electric vehicles to be lighter.

The module also has double the energy density and can supply over 1.5W of power at 105 Celsius. It can operate IGBT, silicon carbide and gallium nitride switches at high bandwidth.

Only 10 components are required for the module and Texas Instruments also put in protection against overcharging and overheating.

The US chip giant was currently testing the module with global automobile makers, it said.
