RFsemi begins SiC power chip supply using 6-inch foundry 

RFsemi said on Wednesday that it has begun production and supply of silicon carbide (SiC) power management IC to a South Korean customer.

It has been collaborating with the customer since last year to manufacture chips using 6-inch wafers.

RFsemi will be supplying JBS diode, which makes the current flow in one direction, that is used in electric vehicles and TVs.

Power management ICs made with SiC or gallium nitride (GaN) are more durable against voltages compared to those made with silicon.

They can also be made smaller and consume less power, and are seeing demand rise.

There is currently a shortage in SiC power management ICs as only a few companies can produce them.

There are only around three fabs in South Korea that can manufacture them.

RFsemi currently has a capacity of 6,000 wafers per month for its 6-inch fab.
