Samsung Electronics has removed a 70-inch range MicroLED TV from its lineup planned for next year, TheElec has learned.

The company will launch MicroLED TV aimed at the home market in three sizes __ 89-inch, 101-inch and 114-inch.

Samsung will be applying low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistors (TFT) in all three models.

LTPS TFT, which are based on glass substrates, are being used to realize individual protective circuits on the three models that are smaller in size in terms of previous iterations of MicroLED.

For its 110-inch MicroLED TV launched earlier this year, Samsung had applied printed circuit board circuits, which is difficult to apply when the LED chips become smaller. It becomes harder to maintain the same picture resolution as well.

The use of LTPS TFT board is a more advanced technology.

MicroLED uses LED chips that are under 100 micrometers in size and each acts as the red, green and blue pixels.

Samsung has originally planned to launch MicroLED TV in the 70-inch and 80-inch ranges with LTPS TFT technology.

The 70-inch range was removed while 101-inch and 114-inch versions are new additions.

The South Korean tech giant seems keen on focusing on ultra-large-sized models for its MicroLED TVs.

With its current technology, it is difficult for the company to offer a 4K resolution MicroLED TV with a price tag under 100 million won. By comparison, there are already 8K resolution liquid crystal display TVs and OLED TVs.

This makes a 4K resolution 70-inch MicroLED TV unattractive for the market when there are better and cheaper options for consumers.

Samsung Display is providing the LTPS TFT Samsung plans to use in the MicroLED TVs. Samsung has originally asked Taiwan’s AUO to supply the transistors but it changed the supplier to its affiliate, believing it will be difficult to control AUO.

Meanwhile, in January, Samsung had said it plans to launch a 99-inch MicroLED TV between March and April this year. It is yet to launch one, however.

The company is developing technology to narrow the distance between LED chips to early 0.5mm for its TVs under 100-inch in size.

The pixel distance for the 110-inch version was 0.63mm. This model has a price tag of 170 million won.
