Samsung Electro-Mechanics said on Tuesday it has developed a new 3225 multi layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) for 5G base stations.

The MLCC (3.2mm horizontally, 2.5mm vertically) can be installed on the power terminal of base stations. It has a 10uF capacity and can withstand 100V.

The company said it will begin supplying the capacitors to a global network equipment maker next month.

The new MLCC has over double the capacity of its previous iteration in the same size.

This will allow vendors to use one capacitor to transfer power where it required two to three.

The new MLCC also guarantees a bending strength of 3mm, the company said, which means the capacitors will still work even if the board is warped by 3mm due to heat and other external shocks.

5G base stations have more antenna and components compared to their 4G counterparts, which means they also require up to four times the number of MLCCs, or around 20,000 units.

More base stations are required to be installed for 5G network as they have shorter range due to the high frequency used.
