South Korean to spend 400 billion won to strengthen AI chip tech
Fund to spend over 7 years from 2022 in PIM
South Korea is planning to spend 407.2 billion won for seven years to develop technologies related to AI semiconductors in the country.
The Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP), a sub-agency of the Ministry of Science and ICT, said on Friday that the funds will be spent from 2022 to 2028, and be used in projects related to processor-in-memory (PIM) for AI applications.
PIM chips, unlike conventional memory chips, contain processing capabilities in the chip.
As the memory and CPU are in one chip, there is no need for data to be transmitted back and forth between them, increasing processing speed and power efficiency.
The technology is seen as a must for AI that requires fast processing of massive amounts of data.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and ICT also plans to spend 39 billion won from 2022 to 2025 for the development of AI chips related to autonomous driving.
