Posco Chemical completes new synthetic graphite anode factory
The first in South Korea
Posco Chemical has completed a new synthetic graphite anode factory at Pohang.
It is the first such factory in South Korea, which the company spent 230.7 billion won to build.
The factory will be expanded up to 2023 to produce 16,000 metric tonnes of anode a year.
The latest completion has secured Posco Chemical with an annual production capacity of 8,000 metric tonnes, enough to power 210,000 units of 60kWh electric vehicles.
Synthetic graphite extends batteries on electric vehicles and slows down charging time.
South Korea had relied on imports from Japan and China for the material so far.
Posco Chemical can now manufacture cathode as well as natural and synthetic graphite anodes. Its subsidiary PMC Tech can also produce needle coke, which is used to manufacture synthetic graphite.
